Weather
As the Seaway Trail winds through Great Lakes maritime communities,
travelers and residents alike are treated to four seasons of
distinctive weather.
Here in Hamburg, New York, as in the rest of the
Buffalo-Niagara region, we're treated to our famous "lake effect"
weather - prevailing winds picking up evaporation from Lake Erie and
depositing it as snow in the winter months, feeding the local ski
slopes and the region's slightly undeserved national reputation as a
"snow capital".
The Golden Snowball Contest
- the it's-all-in-good-fun annual contest among upstate New York cities
for which is the snow champion for that year. Spoiler Alert: Buffalo
usually loses out to Syracuse and has to duke it out with Rochester for
second or third place for total annual snowfall. For 2008-09, Buffalo came in third to Syracuse's first and Rochester's second.
Coming soon: Lake Erie Web Cam - the Lake Erie vista as seen from LESTC here in Hamburg.
Coming soon: The live feed of the LESTC Weatherbug Weather Station.

What's a seiche? Glad you asked. Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes, can be like a bathtub! Steadily blowing winds can push water up on one side of the lake, lowering lake levels on the opposite side. Once the winds cease, water can slosh back, like in a bathtub. Just on a much larger scale.
